The Block of Cement

Actually my Christmas present to my Mom. It's a stepping-stone for the garden, cast from a rhubarb leaf.

Rockliffe Airbase

Rockliffe Airbase is slowly but surely being "decommissioned" Only a few streets of mostly personnel housing remains on what was once one of the bsuiest airbases in Ontario. Empty houses and the many office buildings have been torn down, leaving narrow tarmac streets, slowly being eaten away by weeds and trees; cement stairs leading nowhere; and rusting roadsigns.

Soon, even those will be gone -- ripped up to make way for affordable housing for the rich.

Annullment

Gee, Thanks. I just got this lovely frameable Certificate of Nullity from the Cathoilic Marriage Tribunal.

Considering the fact that neither my ex nor myself are/were Catholic, and weren't married in the Catholic Church, I still don't understand why they have decreed my marriage to be null. However, their kindness will be reciprocated with a certificate welcoming them into the Middle Ages....

I will post a copy of that.

Hurricane Frances

Hurricane Frances dumped 122 millimeters on Ottawa, in a mere 24 hours. That is a LOT of rain. Lots of power-outs all over. Luckily, it all stopped before before it got much worse.

Sunday Picnic

Krys and her kids, and I went for a picnic on Maple Island on the Rideua River.

This is probably the most historic area of Ottawa, and yet a lot of people know nothing about the history of the area.

Here are a couple of websites that will give you a little history:

Oxford Mills

Mom and I drove out to Oxford Mills.

Unfortunately, I put my contacts in and can't see close-up well with them. Many of these are pretty blurry.

Thunder Bay Trip, June 30-July 4, 2004

Mom and I moved my Niece, her husband, two kids, a friend, three dogs, a cat, and a hamster, plus their furniture, to Thunder Bay.

Mom drove the family in the van, and I drove the U-Haul. 1503 km. Two days to go there, and we took 3 days to return.

Most of my photos are from the return trip.

Hogsback Falls

----

A Hog's Back is a ridge of limestone that looks like the ridged back of a hog. The Hog's Back in Ottawa was, originally, a set of waterfalls which marked the end of a seven-mile stretch of shallow water along the Rideau River. The river at this point was 170 feet wide and an elevation difference to the Ottawa River of over 100 feet. From teh Hog's Back travelling through rapids and shallows until it went over the 30 foot Rideau Falls into the Ottawa River.

Upstream from Hogs Back were several sections of rapids including Three Rock Rapids.
During the War of 1812, the need was seen to build an inland route to get goods and troops to Kingston, then the capital of Canada, should the Americans cut off access via Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

Colonel By, after whom By Town (later Ottawa) was named, was given the enormous task of building a canal between By Town on the Ottawa River, and Kingston on Lake Ontario.

During 1828 and 1829, work began on the building of the dam at Hog's Back Falls.

In 1832, the Rideau Canal opened. It is the oldest canal in continuous use in North America. It never saw use for its intended purpose of defence, but it served as a major transportation route until 1875, when the railway made its usefulness for transport obsolete. Still, it has endured and is used for recreational travel.

Sadly, Colonel By, in disgrace, due to scandals over cost over-runs in the building of the canal, died at age 52, his feat unrecognised until long after his death.

Moon Halo

Despite the temperature being -14C (-23C with the Wind Chill Factor*) and it being expected to drop to -27C (-38 with the WCF) overnight, it looked like it was preparing to snow.

There was an incredible halo around the moon. The moon, itself, was slightly hazy, but there was a huge ring, though, some distance away.

It was beautiful!

*Wind Chill Factor (WCF) is what most Canadians concern themselves with in winter. WCF is what the temperature actually feels like when you factor in humidity and windspeed. The wind can also make our body feel colder through the evaporation of any existing moisture from our skin. Through this process more heat is drawn from our body.

Lunar Eclipse

I took these photos on my street, without the aid of my little tripod. They turned out pretty well, considering the ambient light, and no flat surface to steady my camera on. The last set of photos I was holding the camera on a railing, so they are a bit better.
