volunteer teacher in Ethiopia in 1987-88
senior programme officer for the Americas from 1989 to 1993, WUSC Ottawa
Karen is a humanitarian and has worked as an elections officer for various UN-sponsored election missions.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Montenegro as a short-term observer of its parliamentary elections in April 2001
Skopje in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as an electoral administration specialist with the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES)
"In the summer of 1996, I participated in a three-week election supervision mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with some 30 other Canadians who were recruited by the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV) on behalf of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). This was the first of nine missions, and a few years of election work in the Balkans. Prior to that, I had already had the WUSC experience, having been its first volunteer teacher in Ethiopia in 1987-88, and then having worked at WUSC Ottawa as a senior programme officer for the Americas from 1989 to 1993."
